St. Paddy’s Day Inspired Living Room

Good Morning!

With St. Paddy’s Day coming up on Monday, this morning I thought I would put together a living room design idea inspired by the holiday.  So I headed over to my Polyvore page and created this…

I used the IKEA stockholm sofa in a gorgeous kelly green as the base. Then I added those gorgeous round-back armchairs and layered it wooden and marble accents pieces. To add a pop of colour I used a dark cranberry morrocan style rug and some throw pillows. I have to say, I’m really liking the green and cranberry colour combo. What do you think?

Have a great day!

Etsy Finds: Dreaming of Spring Colour in the Kitchen

Good Morning!

In the aftermath of yesterday’s new dump of snow and today’s temperatures predicted to be in the “holy crap my skin is burning” windchill range in Toronto, I’m done with winter. And I normally LIKE winter, I really do. But it’s time for it to start to show some signs of spring. I want flowers to poke up in the dirt, to smell that fresh muddy air from the melting snow and thawing ground, and to see some buds growing on the trees.  Sigh.  The good news?  I’m taking a little trip to warmer climates in exactly two weeks!  My friend is attending a conference in Phoenix, AZ and I’m going to meet her there after it’s over and we are heading to Scottsdale for 3 days of hanging out by the pool, hiking in the desert and spa time.  Ahhhh.

However, until then spring is on my mind.  And when I think of spring I think of colour. Light and bright colour to be exact. And today I’ve got a colourful, happy, spring-y round-up of kitchen and dining tools from Etsy.

Spring Kitchen copy Pink Hand Painted Kitchen Wooden Tools from Kill an Hour, Vintage Wood Bowl on a Pedestal from Oh Yeah Vintage, Large Mint Green Ladle from Shop Rethink, Vitreous Wares Bright Blue Stoneware Ceramic Shallow Bowls, Handmade Palawan Beach Sentosa Bright Yellow Berry Bowl/Pasta Colander from Extruder Girl, Neon Chartreuse and Satin White Ceramic Pottery Bowl from Vitreous Wares , Confetti Table Runner from Avril Loreti Modern Home (Canadian!)

I love the mint green ladle and the super fun table runner, but all of these pieces remind me of the colours that I hope to see very, very soon in my backyard! You can shop all of my Etsy home faves by clicking on the Etsy “Handmade & Vintage Items to Come Home To” button on my sidebar.

I see a banquette in my future…

Good Morning,

I am slowly working on getting my dining area in my kitchen complete.  Round gate-leg table stripped and painted….check.  Two new dining chairs…..check. But the next step is what to put along the wall of the dining area. You see I would like to be able to put the table leaf down along the wall most of the time, which doesn’t really allow for 2 additional chairs on the inside…..but what just might work is a banquette. Plus, with a banquette I might be able to get some additional storage, which I’m always up for.  I’m thinking something like this IKEA hack using Expedit shelving.

via IkeaHackers.com

I would choose another fabric, but I would like something like it with a cushion seat and padded seat back. I also heard that Expedit is being discontinued, so I’m wondering if could the materials for cheaper? Hmmm. Otherwise I would build it from scratch, but that would be a bit more time-consuming. What do you think about banquettes? Yah or Nay?

Have a great Friday!

Convert it: Fireclay Tile

Good Morning!

Every once in a while I come across something which allows the science-y part of my brain to collide with the design part of my brain.  I love it when that happens. Today’s “Convert It” post is one of those moments. Let’s start by admiring these beautiful soft grey tiles by Fireclay Tile, shall we?

Lovely right? Well my friends, you are about to love them even more. These gorgeous tiles are made from recycled CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) glass. CRT glass which was originally developed to create a way for projecting images onto a screen and up until not too long ago most TV and computer screens were made with this technology. CRT glass is exceptionally thick and shatter resistant which also makes is very difficult to recycle.  Fireside Clay decided there had to be a way to deal with this waste.  So they created “Phosphor” tile made from the CRT glass.

They work with a e-waste company who provides them with the CRT glass.  They then heat it up and crush it into a soft powder so it can be melted into these awesome tiles.

They started a Kickstarter campaign to raise the funds to buy the new molds required to make these tiles and met their goal in December.  And these recycled CRT tiles will be available for sale in Spring of 2014.

You can read more about this on Inhabitat, where you will find a great infographic showing company’s purpose and process for these CRT tiles.  Don’t you just love a product created with a boatload of ingenuity?

Have a great day!

Etsy Finds: Napkin Rings

 Good Morning!

Now that my table is finished, I’ve started to work on the tablescape.  (I have to make the table look pretty BEFORE I photograph and share it with you, obviously….).  I’ve been looking at table runners, chargers, plates, napkins, aaaand the topic of today’s post, napkin rings. As usual, Etsy comes through as an amazing source for vintage and handmade tableware.  So, I rounded up a few super fun napkin rings that just might make it onto my new kitchen table soon.

Dining Room Chairs Option 2: Probability Chair

Good Morning!

After some major searching I’ve found another option for my dining table chairs. If you recall with my first option, the wishbone chair, I had some concerns with it’s comfort.  Since that post I’ve had an opportunity to sit in one.  It isn’t uncomfortable but I also didn’t sit down and say, “ooooh this is niiiice”.  So it’s still on the table (or I suppose at the table in this case). However in the same store that I tried out the wishbone (Morba on Queen Street West), I discovered an unlikely new candidate.  Let me explain…

We all have seen the Eames DSW dining chairs…

I do really like the look of these chairs, especially when inserted into a not so modern space.

They look great, and I love the dowel legs, but I had never considered these because I find them really uncomfortable.  Enter the Probability Chair by Zuo Modern which is an upholstered version of the Eames DSW.  I sat in this chair on the weekend and it is really comfortable!  And I really like the look.

I sat in this chair on the weekend and it is really comfortable!  AND the price point is great coming in under $200. I have a feeling that this might be the winner in the end.  What do you think?

IKEA Strind Coffee Table Hack

Good Morning!

This morning I’m sharing a little IKEA coffee table hack. A few years ago I built and upholstered an ottoman/coffee table with a tufted top and storage inside for my living room.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Although not shown above I normally have a lucite tray on top that I use for a hard surface.  I loved this piece for quite awhile but as time has gone on it has started to wear out.  There are stains on it which I haven’t been able to  get out and it just looks a little worse for wear.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA It also has started to annoy me that it doesn’t have a larger hard surface on top.  I could get a bigger tray I suppose, but I think I have just been craving a proper hard top coffee table.  Also, due to my own poor design, it weighs about 1000 pounds.  Ok, not that much but it’s HEAVY.  I used what I had on hand when I built the frame, and the wood I had just happened to be 2×4’s, which aren’t particularly heavy on their own but clearly are when built as a frame.  So the piece is a pain in the a$$ to move.

When I was looking at coffee tables, I came across this Ikea coffee table makeover by the Hunted Interior and was inspired.

via the Hunted Interior

So, I went to Ikea and found this Strind coffee table for $129.00. I like the round shape and the fact that it has a second level. I’m not a fan of the wheels but I figured it was something I could replace later if I wanted too.

Photo via Ikea

I spray painted the metal base using Krylon Metallic Brilliant Gold paint which gives a lovely rosy gold tone which I like.

And this is what I got…

I’m very happy with the result! I’m still not loving the wheels but without them it’s too low, so I’ll have to live with them for now.

Have a great day!

IDS 2014

Good Morning!

Today I’m (FINALLY) sharing my Interior Design Show 2014 experience with you.  I took many photos and picked up many cards/brochures and I’ve managed to whittle it down to my absolute faves for your perusal.

AERIN at Cocoon Furnishings

Aerin Lauder (granddaughter of Ms. Estee Lauder) has made her way into the luxury home decor and furnishings market through her lifestyle brand AERIN. Cocoon Furnishings is the exclusive supplier of the AERIN home line  in Canada.  You can also browse them here. Their booth featured just some of the gorgeous wares from this line.  Loving all the gold and mahogany. Sadly even her picture frames are well out of my budget.

Studio North

The studio north area of the show features mostly Canadian (and some international) studios that create one-of-a-kind and custom design pieces that are unique and forward-thinking.  Always a highlight of the show for me.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA Clockwise from top left: 1. Coffee table from of design inc. 2. Lighting from Morba 3. Birdfeeder from Nieuw. 4. ubagaan from the National Design Collective (this is so cool, part bench -part toboggan, read all about it here) (credit for the ubagaan, bottom right, is the National design collective website)  5. bookends by MSDS Studio,

Mettro

Loved the booth from Mettro. Who wants plain old subway tiles when you can have their beautiful tiles?

IKEA

Seriously, Ikea ALWAYS nails it with their booth at IDS.  They are fabulous at showing how to incorporated their affordable designs and decor with to make them look like you spent a bundle.  You always leave saying “That was IKEA?”  This year was not different from the bathroom vanity on a wall of gold tile to the antique settee upholstered in their affordable fabric line.  As usual IKEA was a hit.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Innit Construction

A new discover y at IDS this year was Innit Construction.  Their line of super fun and highly comfortable indoor-outdoor chairs made from vinyl cording are awesome. The have the classic (Acapulco), a rocker, bar stools and more.  Super fun furniture for your deck. I also was also considering the Concha dining chair (on the left below) for my new table, but the price point is a bit high. (Also, these are going to be carried at the Bay soon).

Wallcoverings

I really enjoyed the funky wall coverings by New Wall and Thoreaux.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Beauti-tone Paint

And one of my favourite booths of the show was from Home Hardware Beauti-Tone paint which featured artist Amy Shackleton who created this amazing art using their paint.  And you got to watch her work! (At least when I was there eon Saturday). Very fun.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Although the show was packed with lots of  other amazing things, those are the high points of my visit.

Did you go to the show? If not I would highly recommend it to you next year. If you did go, what were your faves?

Floor Mirrors

Good Morning!

Can you believe that I don’t own a full-length mirror. Seems crazy that I’ve gone all this time and I don’t have a mirror where I can see my whole outfit at once.  I have bigger mirrors in my bedroom and kitchen but neither of them are full length.  I could go to walmart or target and just buy a run-of-the-mill mirror but what I really want is a beautiful giant floor mirror.  You know, to lean up against one of my non-existent large wall spaces. An architectural  gem that is not JUST a mirror but a furniture piece.  Like these beauties…

I have one wall that I could MAYBE see one working on but it couldn’t be too big.  Maybe.  But a girl can dream for now, right?

Winter Decor Inspiration

Good Morning!

I hope you all had a great weekend.  Mine was uneventful as I came down with a nasty cold on Friday, just in time to ruin my weekend plans (hey germs, excellent timing, thanks!). I have been in pajamas and didn’t speak to a human in real life for 2.5 days.  Needless to say, I was getting a tad stir crazy by Sunday.  Though I wasn’t feeling 100% I decided I needed to finally take down my holiday decorations.  My place now feels less cluttered but it also seems a bit sad and dejected. So I thought I would see what I can do to provide some “winter” decor to my space….because I am a problem solver (and not at ALL because I have an unhealthy obsession with Christmas decor for which I’m now feeling withdrawal symptoms from….). Today I’m sharing some inspiration I found.

There can be some overlap between holiday decor and winter decor, but you want to be careful not to look as though you just forgot to take down your holiday decorations.  Natural elements like wood and greenery work well with both, as does cozy textiles of fur and plaid.  The key to wintery seasonal decor is to make sure it feels warm and cozy.

via 1,2,3,4,5,6,7

I love the idea of using blankets for tablecloths (picture 3).  What a cozy winter look! As sad as I am to part with my holiday decor, I’m excited to add some wintery love to my space soon.

Have a great day!
